The most important thing about a mushroom lamp is not its color or its price but whether light passes through the cap. A glass mushroom lamp glows all over, like a lantern; an opaque metal dome throws a neat pool of light onto the table and stays dark on top. The two look like the same object in a photograph and behave completely differently in a room.
A mushroom lamp is a table or floor lamp with a domed, cap-like shade set on a short stem or rounded base, a form that became a fixture of Italian lighting design in the 1960s and 1970s. Choose a glass or light-diffusing shade for an all-round ambient glow, an opaque dome for a downward pool of light, and size it to the surface: the tabletop versions with published sizes in our range stand 19 to 28 cm (7.5 to 11 in) tall, which makes them accent lamps rather than reading lamps.
The Shape Comes From 1960s and 1970s Italian Design
The mushroom silhouette belongs to a particular moment, when Italian designers were experimenting with new plastics and simple geometric forms. Two lamps in the Museum of Modern Art’s design collection show the range. The Nesso table lamp, designed in 1965 by Giancarlo Mattioli with the Gruppo Architetti Urbanisti Città Nuova and manufactured in Milan, is a broad, low cap in fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin, 33 × 53.3 cm (13 × 21 in) in MoMA’s record. A decade later came Vico Magistretti’s Atollo table lamp of 1977, a hemisphere balanced on a cone and cylinder, made in aluminum and polyurethane plastic and standing 66 cm (26 in) tall.
Two things are worth taking from that history. First, neither of those two is glass: one is resin, the other aluminum and plastic. The form was never tied to one material, and the glass mushrooms common today are one branch of the family. Second, the museum pieces are large. A 53 cm resin dome is a statement object; the tabletop mushrooms in our range are roughly a third of that width, which changes how they are used. When a lamp is described as “retro” or “70s”, it is borrowing the silhouette rather than reproducing a specific design, and that is how our retro mushroom table lamp is described: a modern build of the classic dome shape, not a vintage piece.
Glass Caps Glow All Over and Opaque Domes Pool Light Downward
Every mushroom lamp falls into one of two lighting families, and knowing which one you are buying matters more than any other detail.
- Translucent caps (glass or a diffusing shade) light up as a whole. The cap itself becomes the light source, so the lamp gives a soft, even glow in every direction, lights the wall behind it, and reads as a small lantern from across the room. The trade-off is that less light lands on the table directly below.
- Opaque domes (metal or a solid glossy shade) stay dark on top and send light down and slightly outward, forming a defined circle on the surface beneath. The lamp looks like a sculpture with a glow at its base. It lights a book, a tray or a set of keys well and the ceiling hardly at all.
In practice, a translucent mushroom suits a room that needs more general softness, such as a bedroom that is otherwise lit only by a ceiling fixture. An opaque dome suits a surface where you want light on something specific and a darker, more intimate room around it. Neither is a substitute for a proper reading lamp; our guide to table lamp shade shapes covers how drums, empire shades and domes compare more broadly, and this guide sticks to the mushroom itself.
Glass, Ceramic, Metal and Fabric Each Change the Glow
Glass is the most common material among the mushroom lamps we stock. Tinted glass colors the light itself, so an orange cap gives an amber glow and a beige one a softer, paler warmth. Thicker glass diffuses more evenly. The handmade glass mushroom lamp ($69.99) uses a thickened, hand-shaped glass dome in three marbled designs named Earth, Mars and Moon; because the glass is shaped by hand, the product notes say no two are exactly alike.
At about 15 cm (5.9 in) across and 19 cm (7.5 in) tall, it is the smallest lamp in this comparison. The Mars design shown here turns the whole dome into a warm, streaked glow, which is exactly the translucent-cap effect described above.
Ceramic usually appears in the base rather than the cap, because most ceramic blocks light. The cream mushroom bedside lamp ($69.99) pairs a glossy ceramic base in orange, pink or yellow with a warm cream, light-diffusing shade; the shade material itself is not published, so we describe it only by what it does. The result is a two-part lamp: a solid, colored body and a glowing cap.
Metal gives the classic opaque dome. The retro mushroom lamp has an aluminum dome on a powder-coated steel stem, in Gold-Bronze, Silver or Black. It reads as a solid object by day and throws its light downward at night.
Fabric is the honest gap. We do not currently stock a mushroom lamp with a fabric shade, and fabric domes are less common in this form. If you like the softness of fabric, the closest option in our range is the wabi-sabi urn lamp with a linen-look coolie shade ($189.99, 40 cm / 15.7 in across and 46 cm / 18.1 in tall). It is not a mushroom, but a wide coolie shade diffuses light in a similar low, spreading way.

Read down the Light column first. Five of the seven are glowing lamps; two are downlights. Then read Power and bulb, because it decides where the lamp can physically go, which is the subject of the next two sections.
Size the Lamp to the Surface It Sits On
Mushroom lamps are compact by nature, and that is both their charm and their limit. A few rules of thumb, offered as starting points rather than laws:
- Nightstand (roughly 40–50 cm / 16–20 in wide). A 15–20 cm (6–8 in) wide mushroom leaves room for a book, a glass and a phone, which is usually what a bedside table needs. The smaller glass lamps suit this best.
- Desk. Place the lamp to the side, not in front of a screen, and treat it as background light. An opaque dome is the better choice here because it keeps light off the monitor.
- Console or sideboard (100 cm / 39 in or longer). A single 19 cm lamp can look lost on a long surface. Use a pair at the ends, or group one mushroom with taller objects such as a vase and stacked books so it is part of an arrangement rather than a lone dot.
- Shelf. Check the clearance above: a 25.5 cm (10 in) lamp needs a shelf opening taller than that, plus some air above the cap so the glow can spread.
- Floor. At 165 cm (65 in), the floor lamp lifts the dome above seated eye level, so it washes light down over the arm of a sofa or chair rather than into your eyes.
The cream mushroom lamp shown on a nightstand is 20 × 20 × 25.5 cm (7.9 × 7.9 × 10 in) and weighs about 0.85 kg (1.87 lb), which is a comfortable scale for a standard bedside table with space left for a small stack of books. For what else earns a place there, see what belongs on a bedside table.
Height has one more consequence. The retro lamp’s own product notes say that at full brightness it works for short reading sessions but is better as a mood light than a primary task lamp, and the same applies to every tabletop mushroom here. A light source 19–28 cm above the nightstand sits well below where a reading lamp usually needs to be when you are propped up in bed. Pair a mushroom with a wall light or a taller lamp if you read every night.
Bulbs, Built-In LEDs and Batteries Decide Where It Can Go
Mushroom lamps in our range use three kinds of power, and each suits a different spot.
Built-in LED, powered by USB or a plug. Most of the glass lamps and the cream mushroom lamp have their light built in, so there is no bulb to buy or replace. USB power is convenient beside a bed or desk where a USB port or adapter is already within reach. The trade-off is that you cannot change the bulb’s brightness or tone beyond what the lamp’s own modes allow, so choose the control option carefully.
Replaceable screw-in bulb. The plug-in versions of the handmade glass lamp take a standard E27 bulb, and the floor lamp takes a standard screw-in bulb; in both cases the bulb is not included. That gives you control over tone. For a mushroom lamp, a warm bulb is usually right: the US Department of Energy’s bulb guidance lists 2,700K as a warm light suited to homes, against 4,100K for a cooler, office-style light. Our guide to lamp wattage and bulb types explains how to check what a fitting can take.
Cordless rechargeable. The retro mushroom lamp has an internal battery with USB-C charging, and its product page gives up to 20 hours at the lowest setting and 6 hours at the brightest. Cordless is the answer for a dining table, a sideboard far from a socket, or a lamp you carry from room to room in the evening. It is not the best choice for a lamp that stays on at full brightness for long stretches, because it will need charging often.
The mushroom dome floor lamp ($342.99) is the plug-in, replaceable-bulb end of the range: 165 cm (65 in) tall, with a glossy red-orange dome over a small reflector cap that leaves a thin gap where the warm bulb glows. Its color makes it the room’s accent, so the rest of the corner is best kept neutral.
Controls Range From Stepless Dimming to a Simple Touch
For a lamp used mostly in the evening, controls matter more than they first appear. The options on the lamps we stock, as each product page describes them:
- Stepless dimming with three light tones on the glass mushroom bedside lamp ($59.99), so brightness can be set anywhere between low and bright, and the tone moved from warm to cool.
- Remote dimming with a timer as one option on the cream mushroom lamp, useful beside a bed when you want the light to switch itself off.
- Touch sensor with three brightness levels on the retro lamp, operated from the stem.
- A range of styles on the mushroom glass atmosphere lamp, from a fixed warm light to tri-color, dimming and a 16-color remote version.
Where a page does not describe the switch, as with the handmade glass lamp, the flame lamp and the floor lamp, we have left it as not published rather than guess. If a dimmer matters to you, choose one of the lamps above that states it. Multi-color modes are fun in a child’s room or a games corner, but for a calm living room or bedroom a fixed warm setting is usually what gets used.
Where a Mushroom Lamp Works and Where It Does Not
A mushroom lamp is at its best as a second or third light in a room: the glow on a nightstand, the warm point on a shelf, the small lamp on a sideboard that makes the room feel lived-in once the ceiling light is off. It is also forgiving for people who are unsure of their style, because the form sits comfortably in mid-century, Japandi and plain modern rooms alike.
It is not the right tool when a room needs real task light. A kitchen counter, a desk used for paperwork, or a reading chair all need a lamp with a higher, better-directed light source, and a mushroom beside them will only add atmosphere. Nor is a single small mushroom enough to light a whole living room; think of it as one layer. The guide to USB rechargeable bedside lamps goes deeper on cordless options if portability is the priority.
If you are choosing between a glowing and an opaque version, stand where you usually sit in the evening and ask what you want to see: the lamp itself as a soft light, or the surface it lights. The first points to glass, the second to a metal dome. Browse the full table and desk lamps or the floor and arc lamps to see them alongside other shapes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a mushroom lamp?
A mushroom lamp is a table or floor lamp with a domed, cap-like shade on a short stem or rounded base. The form became a fixture of Italian lighting design in the 1960s and 1970s. Today it comes in glass, ceramic-and-shade and metal versions, and tabletop models are usually compact accent lamps.
Is a glass or metal mushroom lamp better?
Neither is better overall; they do different jobs. A glass cap glows all over and gives soft ambient light in every direction. An opaque metal dome stays dark on top and pools light onto the surface below, which suits a desk or a spot where you want light on something specific.
Can a mushroom lamp be used as a reading lamp?
Only for short sessions. Tabletop mushroom lamps are small, so the light sits low and is mostly ambient. If you read in bed every night, pair one with a wall light or a taller lamp whose light source sits closer to shoulder height.
What size mushroom lamp suits a nightstand?
On a typical nightstand of 40 to 50 cm wide, a lamp about 15 to 20 cm across leaves room for a book, a glass and a phone. Lamps around 19 to 28 cm tall suit most bedside tables. On a long console, use a pair or group one with taller objects.
Do mushroom lamps need a bulb?
It depends on the model. Many glass and USB mushroom lamps have a built-in LED and need no bulb. Others, such as plug-in versions with an E27 socket or a floor lamp, take a standard screw-in bulb that is usually sold separately. Check the product page before buying.
Are mushroom lamps a passing trend?
The shape has been produced since at least the 1960s, and early examples such as the 1965 Nesso and the 1977 Atollo are held in the Museum of Modern Art’s design collection. Specific colors come and go, so a neutral or classic metal finish will date more slowly than a bright novelty color.
